Description
Houghton Point delivers the Apostle Islands cave experience on the sheltered east side of the Bayfield Peninsula, where the water stays calm and the cliffs glow with afternoon light. Five separate sandstone chambers and a freestanding sea stack rise straight out of Lake Superior along this stretch, all accessible from a quiet boat ramp in Washburn.
The route hugs the cliff line for about four miles round trip. We thread the kayaks through arches just wide enough for a paddle, drift through caves with the lake echoing off the chamber walls, and float beside the sea stack where cliff swallows nest by the hundreds. The water here is shallow and warm enough through summer that wetsuits are unnecessary, which makes Houghton Point our most welcoming sea cave tour for first time paddlers and families.

Houghton Point is one of our most weather reliable bookings. The Bayfield Peninsula shelters Chequamegon Bay from prevailing winds, so this tour runs even when the open lake is rough.
